What is the Crime Severity Index?

What a city-level CSI can’t tell you
Three blind spots matter for a household decision. Within-city variation: a low-CSI city contains high-crime blocks and vice versa — the metro number averages them away. Crime mix: two cities with identical CSIs can get there differently, one on property crime, one on violence; only the breakdown tells you which risk you’re actually buying into. And reporting effects: the CSI counts police-reported crime, so places where minor property crime goes unreported score better than they should.
